‘Ink-Re-cap 301: Random Sketches and Scribbles
from a tiny home-grown stationery shop.
“Owl” is the word this week,
along with letting go of heavy loads.
How was your first week of 2023?
I don’t want to start the New Year by complaining, but our first week was busier than I want the next 51 weeks to be. It was all good stuff, like my sister and her husband coming to town for a couple of months of sunshine. They got a nice little apartment in a nice complex. It was only partially furnished, so we helped gather some things for them.
Now we’re looking forward to family time with a sister who is usually 2000 miles away. Shopping, playing Scrabble, finding new restaurants; all the things this sister and I love to do together. And drag our husbands along to “enjoy” as well as they can.
Another thing we want for the next 51 weeks:
The beautiful soft rain we had on Monday, the second day of the year.
If we could replicate that every week, our desert could get caught up with ground water and not have to turn the water off to farms that have been in operation for years.
We don’t expect that, though. We’ll be thankful for whatever we get, however.

Inklings of Real Life
A Snowy Owl in Orange County
This week my email included a story about excited birdwatchers catching sight of a snowy owl in Southern California. This is enough to make them think they’ll have a “Big Year” with record-breaking viewings. The last sighting of this owl so far south was in 1918, and that was word of mouth. There were no photos.
Experts think the owl got swept off track with the big snow storms sweeping down from the northwest so the midwest.
Another authority suggested the owl rode south on a tanker, finding the weather so fine he didn’t get off where he was supposed to.
In spite of the owls’ reputation for wisdom, this owl isn’t talking, so we’ll never know why he became a “snowbird.”
Whooo’ll Chuckle at this predictable knock-knock?
Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Owls.
Owls who?
Exactly!

The Heart Mender; A Story of Second Chances
by Andy Andrews
Everyone deserves a second chance. In this book, based on historical facts from World War 2, a war widow learns to let go of the pain of the past. Through none other than an injured German soldier. I chose this title for this week because of our Inspirational Friday post.
Amazon says:
Saddened and unable to abandon her resentment toward the Nazi war machine that took her husband’s life, Helen Mason is living a bitter, lonely existence. Betrayed and left for dead, German U-boat officer Lt. Josef Landermann washes ashore in a sleepy town along the northern gulf coast, looking to Helen for survival.
As you uncover the incredible story within the pages of The Heart Mender, you’ll learn:
- The transformative power of forgiveness
- How to embrace God’s gift of grace
- The healing experience of letting go
The Heart Mender is a can’t-miss story of life, loss, and reconciliation that will change your perspective for the better.
Owl Moon
by Jane Yolen
Lovely picture book with a sweet story of a little girl’s relationship with her father.
Amazon description:
Late one winter night a little girl and her father go owling. The trees stand still as statues and the world is silent as a dream. Whoo-whoo-whoo, the father calls to the mysterious nighttime bird.
But there is no answer.
Wordlessly the two companions walk along, for when you go owling you don’t need words. You don’t need anything but hope. Sometimes there isn’t an owl, but sometimes there is.
Distinguished author Jane Yolen has created a gentle, poetic story that lovingly depicts the special companionship of a young child and her father as well as humankind’s close relationship to the natural world. Wonderfully complemented by John Schoenherr’s soft, exquisite watercolor illustrations, this is a verbal and visual treasure, perfect for reading around and sharing at bedtime.
