Random Sketches and Scribbles
About red-letter days and coincidences and “First Love” and…
We have a red-letter day happening today!
This is a day we’ve been working toward for years. Kim might know the exact number, but I can’t keep it straight.
At least two years ago we began applying for disability benefits for Kim to make sure she’d have resources in the future. When her Dad retires and can’t subsidize our hobbies anymore (like this blog). We’ve had a lawyer working on her behalf all this time and our last email convo with her gave no indication that on
Friday, August 5, 2022
a lady calling from a generic computer phone number would call and tell us her SSDI was approved.
And now, get this, because I think it’s too funny,
she wants to have a phone call with both of us this morning
because she wants to make sure Kim gets her money as soon as possible.
So with all our creds ready, we will talk to Judy at 10:00 am,
and Kim will be on her way to feeling a tiny bit more secure for the future.
Although, as you may realize by now, feeling secure is a really elusive thing for Kim. And we ask you to keep praying for her, for a calm heart and a relaxed mind. She struggles with anxiety in some form almost 24-7, so these moments of celebration are huge for us.
And your prayers are huger. because that allows her to feel the moments of peace she does have.
Because only God can give that to her. (Her meds have never worked very well, no matter what they prescribe.)

The World Outside Our Work Window: Coincidences and Mess Ups

In more personal revelation, this week I, Dorothy, applied for Medicare.
Yes, this family is having one Red Letter Day after another!

I renewed my driver’s license. Now, that, my friends is a chaotic Arizona governmental experience of embarrassing proportions. Since these nearby towns have grown so much and the demand is twice what it was the last time I went in (don’t ask when that was), the DMV building has grown. Not size-wise. Nope. They now have triple the number of kiosks stuffed into the same original square feet.
When you need an eye exam, it’s no fancy-schmancy machine you peer into to see if you can catch vehicles moving in on your peripheral. Nope, I was shocked when my clerk grabbed a card, backed up, and said, “Read this line!”
Seriously.
That’s all it was. Read one line, and it’s a “Yes” or “No” whether you get your license.
Sigh. I found out I need to go for an eye exam next. Not because I messed up, but because I almost did.
I’m going, “F O R N E G” the last one very quiet. She thinks I said, “Gee” as in, “I can’t make that one out.” and she asks me what did you say this one was and I said, gambling, it looks like an O and she puts the card down. I guessed right. And it was off to the “Photo Booth” which is the next joke of the day.

“Sit on the chair.”
“Look at the circle. I’ll be right with you. Let me get this first.” Fumble, fumble at the computer. “Okay, smile if you want to. Oh, take your glasses off. Okay, ready?” Massive lightning in my face. “Good. You can go back to your kiosk.”
I get my new license as soon as it reels out of the printer, with a face that looks like Franklin the Frog. Head squashed down so my neck is half the length it should be. Seriously, I have a double chin now? Hubs took one look at it and said, with fear in his voice because it’s soon his turn, “Boy, they messed that one up!” But I smiled/stretched my mouth and sighed, “Government!” under my breath. Poor overworked “get er done in half the time” people.

Our Sunday School lesson this week is titled, “Our First Love.” It will be no surprise to you to hear it is our 4oth Anniversary. Yes, tomorrow. The same day as that lesson. Forty, people. Massive, incredible, unbelievable word. I suppose I could have a double chin. (But only when I look down.)

Books of the week:
by Russel Conwell
I found reference to this book while I was researching Hattie Mae, the little girl who saved 57 cents, and inspired a congregation to “dig in their own backyard” and build a church.
Amazon:
Russell Conwell (1843-1925) was an American Baptist minister best remembered as the founder and first president of Temple University and for his inspirational lecture, “Acres of Diamonds” (1913).
The central idea of the work is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune; the resources to achieve all good things are present in one’s own community. This theme is developed by an introductory anecdote, credited by Conwell to an Arab guide, about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly that he sold his property and went off in futile search for them. The new owner of his home discovered that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. Conwell elaborates on the theme through examples of success, genius, service, or other virtues involving ordinary Americans contemporary to his audience: “dig in your own backyard!”
100 years later the messages from Acres of Diamonds still ring true and inspire.
And one for your littles,
by Shel Silverstein
A classic one can read over and over. Because I couldn’t find a biography of Hattie Mae Wyatt.
Amazon:
“Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy.”
So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk…and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation.
