Why Did I Poke That Dog: How To Keep My Soul Pure
Life invites me to test the forbidden, to poke that dog I should leave alone. Yet The Heavenly Doctor stands ready with an invisible army to fight invisible enemies and keep my soul pure.
My Little-Farm-by-the-River Son shared his thoughts with me about this subject.
I asked him if I could share with you, so here is his wisdom (sent from God).
A Dangerous Stick: Testing The Forbidden
One day in the 1800s a young boy named Joseph Meister tormented his neighbor’s dog with a stick. The dog foamed at the mouth and tried to bark but could not. Joseph, oblivious to the danger of the dog’s condition, found it amusing to antagonize a dog acting strangely.
Eventually Joseph tired of the game and wandered on.
Unknown to him, the gate to the dog’s yard was open. And just a few steps later the rabid dog attacked Joseph. Fourteen bites were
the result.
Joseph yelled for his dad and his dad came to the rescue.
But the father was deeply saddened. He knew what his careless son did not. A promising life was about to be cut short. There was no cure for rabies that he knew of.
Oh, the sadness in that house was overwhelming!
No hope!
Then one day his mother read that Dr. Louis Pasteur had discovered a cure for rabies. The hope that young Joseph could live flooded their hearts! “Quick, let’s get a carriage for him so we can get him to Dr. Pasteur!” They traveled to Paris wondering if they dared hope. Might there be a future for their beloved son?
Meanwhile, Joseph was terrifyingly sick and miserable and full of regret. “Why did I poke that dog with a stick?” he agonizes.
Finally they arrive in Paris and find the man with the cure. The doctor speaks of his new vaccine as invisible soldiers attacking an invisible enemy. Will it work? Is this truly a cure? With no acceptable alternative they push ahead and eventually the battle is won! He is free from the dreaded enemy!
Keep a Soul Pure and a Heart Clean of Forbidden Thoughts
Do you know what Joseph did when he grew up? He became a gatekeeper at Dr. Pasteur’s clinic.
Do you think he filled his position grudgingly? Did he tell people,” Yes, this doctor has the cure, but I don’t know if it’s for you?”
Did he say, “I sure wish I could be out enjoying life somewhere else?”
Or did he question if he really had to come there for healing? Could he perhaps have found healing at home or in the great outdoors or at a different hospital?
Was only his body present at his work while his mind was occupied with cares of life or interesting things around him? Most surely he was enthused and telling sick people, “This is the only hope of life you have. Come in the gates at once! There is no time to waste! Please come!”
Why Did I Poke That Dog?
Jesus’ blood supplied us with an invisible army. We’ll never know the full extent of problems we’ve been spared because of its covering. When we open the door to the Word of God, it comes in and fights against our invisible enemies. (Isaiah 55:11)
As we absorb the convictions and manner of life of our Church family, they can help identify and push out the enemy in our lives.
People who don’t claim faith in God also provide ‘vaccines’ that help us stay well.
The immunity found in a life filled with invisible soldiers is overwhelming. (2 Kings 6:17)
Am I convinced there’s a purpose for this immunity in my life or do I think I can make it ‘vaccine’ free?
Do I know His power?
Am I allowing it to reign in my life?
There are times when I say like Joseph Meister, “ Why did I poke that dog?!”
“Why do I allow evil thoughts in my heart?”
“Why can’t I forgive more easily?”
There are so many variations of rabid dogs out there!
How To Keep My Soul Pure
Thank God there is a cure for all the questions.
Although we won’t be completely free of “rabid dogs” until we get to heaven, we will see sanctification happening in our lives and the freedom that comes from repenting of sins and forsaking them.
If we still feel sick, and the freedom we long for isn’t there, we can go see the Physician again.
He’s available anytime, anywhere, for anyone.
Don’t deny yourself the joy of living life abundantly and well: cured from ‘disease’, with a pure soul!
