Mason Jar Recipes For Friends and Neighbors
Since these are both cooked/baked after gifting,
it should be safe to layer the ingredients in the jar for your friends.
However, to be perfectly safe, buy all ingredients in tiny packets and stuff into the jar in the packets.
For example, buy a Caramel Nut Brownie Mix, open and unpack the box, then place the separate packets in the jar.
The soup might be more of a challenge to find small enough packets, but you can use a bigger jar.
Taco Soup In a Jar
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup dehydrated black or pinto beans
- 1/2 cup freeze-dried corn
- 1 tsp. Taco Seasoning
- 1/4 cup tomato powder
- 1/2 tsp. each garlic powder, onion powder, salt
- 1/4 tsp. cumin
- 1 tbsp. chicken bouillon
All these dehydrated ingredients can be purchased from Walmart, with 2 day free qualified shipping. Or, if you have your own dehydrator, that’s also a good option. Note: this can be a vegan recipe if you replace the chicken bouillon with vegetable bouillon.
Mix these ingredients, then add to a quart size wide mouth canning jar.
Buy a small bag of tortilla strips, or place some in a small baggie, then add to jar above the soup ingredients.
Print out the instructions and then tie around the jar neck with baker’s twine.

Now, just a word of canning jar caution, so you and your giftees stay safe.
Sometimes you find recipes for baking something in a jar. According to the Ball/Kerr canning website, canning jars are not intended for exposure to dry heat, such as in an oven. The glass is not tempered, and therefore not safe in prolonged high heat without the water bath. While some of the newer jars are microwave safe, always check before using them in the microwave.
