Thoughts on Scripture Cake
No one really knows where this recipe comes from.
It is claimed that Abigail of the Bible made a version of this cake for David, to appease him when her husband was rude to him.
One source claims it was a special dessert for Dolly Madison, wife of US President James Madison.
In the late nineteenth century in the southern Appalachians, Mamas used it to teach their daughters scripture while working with them in the kitchen.
Early American home schooling at it’s best.
Mark Twain gave us some great history on the nineteenth century. Tom Sawyer was supposed to memorize a lot of scripture; wasn’t allowed to play marbles on the Sabbath and his aunt made sure he followed all the rules for keeping that day holy. Or gave it her best try anyway. (If Tom Sawyer was a real person, what do you think he would have grown up to be?)
It seems scripture learning was more dear to people’s hearts in the nineteenth century than it is today.
Baking a Modern Scripture Cake
I think this would be a fun baking lesson to try with my glittles. A good way to teach them about foods mentioned in the Bible, and,
while they’re looking up the scriptures to figure out the ingredients, they can’t be flinging flour all over the kitchen or digging the heavy milk jug out of the fridge, and, oops, dropping it on the floor.
The old fashioned Scripture Cake recipe calls for 1 Samuel XXX:12 (raisins) and Nahum III:12 (figs) and other slightly strange ingredients. Item my girls may not know much about and likely wouldn’t eat.
So just for fun, we’ll invent Scripture Brownies. Which the oldest glittle loves to make!
My brownie recipe calls for eggs, oil, vanilla, flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
This is what it would look like using scripture verses:
Scripture Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 1/3 cup 1 Kings 4:22
- 2 cups Jeremiah 6:20
- 1/4 cup Luke 15:16
- 1 tsp Amos 4:5
- 1/2 tsp Matthew 5:13
- 2/3 cup Judges 5:25 melted
- 4 Isaiah 10:14
- 2 tsp 2 Chronicles 9:9
Instructions
- Whisk the first five ingredients together in an 8 cup mixing bowl.
- Whip the last 3 ingredients together in a separate bowl, and pour over the dry mixture.
- Stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed. About 30 stirs will get it. You don’t want to over mix.
- Spray a 9″ x 13″ pan. Add the brownie batter, and smooth the top.
- Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes.
You have to stretch your brain cells to figure out Jeremiah 6:20 (sugar) and 2 Chronicles 9:9 (vanilla).
I had fun changing my brownie recipe into Scripture Brownies, and had a Bible Lesson and History Lesson along the way.
Even the process of changing recipe items into Scripture Verses could be a fun activity with school age children. Teachers could use it for either an art class or a devotions project!
