Caramelized Pigs In a Blanket
is the ultimate sweet and savory recipe!
Our Church family loves any excuse to eat together.
It’s Mennonite tradition, just like most churches, I’d guess.
(They say the stomach is the way to a man’s heart. Maybe that involves soul, too.)
You can’t do anything involving the Church group without snacks or a meal.
We love work bees, song services, welcomes and farewells,
added to weddings and receptions and baby showers and bridal showers.
Oh, and did I mention Secret Sister Reveal Brunches?
With all that activity we’re always looking for variety in snack choices.
Because what’s the fun in eating the same thing all the time?
So this Caramelized Pigs In a Blanket recipe is our new favorite.
It’s hard to decide if it’s sweet or savory, it’s that good. And almonds on top? That practically makes it a health food.

Caramelized Pigs In A Blanket
These could hardly be easier to put together.
You just have to remember to buy the ingredients, and don’t bother with a single recipe. Buy the double size little smokies, and use two packages of crescent rolls cut into fourths. The caramel sauce will be enough for the bigger recipe.
The recipe I followed said to cut the crescent rolls into thirds, but we decided most of them were large enough to cut into fourths. I guess we prefer a little dough with more sausage.
And when you melt the sauce ingredients be sure to barely get it warm enough to blend. Don’t boil it before pouring over the piggies.
Side note: Kim and I stopped at a drive through for ice cream on the way home from a doctor’s appointment. The rear window of the car in front of us in the long, slow line was a book full of interesting decals. But one baffled me. It said, “Until all the pigggs fly.” It had puzzle pieces around it, which to me symbolizes autism. But pigs? I’m reading it aloud, and then Kim reads it: “Until all the pieces fit.” What can I say? Crazy unreadable fonts.
So here’s the printable recipe, and these pigs will fly off the plate when you put them in front of your family!
Caramelized Pigs in a Blanket
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup slivered almonds
- 1 pkg. little smokies, large
- 2 pkgs. crescent rolls (16 total)
Instructions
- Melt the butter, and add water and brown sugar. Heat till mixed. Don't boil. Set aside.
- Open the Little Smokies and drain on paper towel. The Pigs in a Blanket will be crisper if the smokies are dry. Set aside.
- Open crescent rolls and divide at perforations. Cut each crescent into fourths, or thirds if you like more blanket on your pigs. We like fourths.
- Roll a piece of dough around each little smokie and place in greased jelly roll pan.
- Pour the caramel and almonds over the Little Smokies and bake at 375° for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden and the dough looks done.
