Monogram Book Page Wreath (Paper Plate DIY)
Would you guess this Monogram Book Page Wreath is constructed on a paper plate? We call that an upcycled upcycle! And economy at it’s best.
At the core of many of our DIY projects lies a profound goal to embrace upcycling and recycling. We cherish the resources we have and try to find beauty in what others might toss. To transform items we use daily into new works of art means we’re not just crafting—we’re doing our part to preserve today to sustain the future. That small footprint people talk about is worth the effort to us. So, when you join us on these “redeux” journeys, you’re not just making art; you’re making an impact.
Take something as simple as a paper plate—it might seem bound for the trash bin, but to us it’s a blank canvas. Pair it with pages from an old book, and voilà! We’re kind of proud of this DIY.
Once upon a time we didn’t have computers or laptops or tablets or smart phones. Yep. Way back, before you Millenials and Generation Xes and Ys came along. We used typewriters, then word processors, but mostly, people like me used paper and pencil to compose our masterpieces. For a long time.
So of course this was before Google became the source of all knowledge. We needed quotations and synonyms and homonyms back then just like we do now. So what did we do?
We had books, people.
Huge tomes filled with all the quotes and definitions and thesaurus words. Now many of those valued books have become trash mulching into dirt in the city dump. At best, for a few lucky ones like mine, they become rustic decor, book stack art, or book page wreaths that become a gift for Baby.
Despite the shift to online ease, we still find charm in these old volumes. They remind us of a time when searching for information meant flipping through pages instead of typing into a search bar. To us they hold a vintage value, serving as unique pieces of art that preserve a tactile piece of the past. Whether newly purposed for home decor or cherished as antiques, the story of these books doesn’t end; it merely changes form. And sometimes, adapts to the decor needs of modern life.
Since I am someone who cannot mulch a book, we bring you…
Monogram Book Page Wreath DIY
We’re convinced you couldn’t come up with a cheaper DIY than this!
Supplies:
- An old book. We used a big, thick Quotations book with nicely yellowed pages.
- 10″ paper plate. We turned ours upside down, and glued the book page squares into the “trough” around the rim.
- Monogram printable. You can buy the initial of your choice in the Woodlands Monogram Wall Art from our Baby Shop.
- Scissors, glue, pencil.
Directions:
We thought this was one of the simplest DIYs we’ve done. It does get a little humdrum with all the gluing of endless little squares of paper. Listen to a book or podcast while you work and the time will go faster.
- Print out the monogram and cut it into a circle that fits the center of the paper plate. Ours ended up about 8″ across. Glue the print onto the plate.
- Pull about 25 or 30 pages out of your book. Cut them into 2″ squares. This doesn’t need to be exact, just guess at the size.
- Place a paper square on the eraser end of the pencil and wrap the corners up around the pencil.
Press the extra folds of paper up against the pencil, then dab the tip into glue. - Start gluing book page squares beside the monogram print.
Glue pieces all around the circle, than glue as many rows as you need to fill the paper plate. - Punch a hole about 1/2 inch from the edge of the plate at the top center and tie a ribbon or string for hanging. We used our crop-a-dile to punch a hole, but an ice pick would work fine. Add cotton baker’s twine for a rustic vibe, or chiffon ribbon for a dressed up look.
