‘Ink-Re-cap 302: Random Sketches and Scribbles
‘Ink-Re-cap 302: Random Sketches and Scribbles
from a tiny home-grown stationery shop.
“Yowl” is the word this week,
along with accepting God’s plans, which He promises are only good.
Now the second week of 2023 is history.
And what a week it was.
I still can’t believe what’s happening in an unexpected and disappointing way. Which is why I want to sit mournfully in a corner and yowl plaintively.
After what we all agreed was a fun outing of lunch and shopping at Hobby Lobby with my sister, Kim had a mountain slide mood that evening. A mood that caused her to feel dying was the only acceptable way to peace. She is in the hospital this weekend after taking too many pills. Not a fun place for her, but her illness didn’t allow her a lot of fun lately, anyway. So this way perhaps she can get some help, quickly. It seems “self-harm” opens the door to help and information no one has seen fit to share with us until now, even though she has often shared how down she feels. The thing with autism though is that the moods are much more mercurial than with regular mood disorders, and she could convince them today that she’s feeling fine, and they’d discharge her. When in reality, she needs ongoing help that we aren’t able to provide at this point.
So the second week of 2023, we ask for your prayers and kind thoughts for Kim.
We need her back on the kimenink team, happy and enthused like she was awhile back.
And it we can’t have that, we pray for the acceptance of God’s plan and the knowledge to do what the best thing is for us all.
Thanks in advance. I know you’ll come through for us.

Inklings of Real Life
Roxy the New York City Owl
As of Christmas of 2021, Rockefeller Center in Manhattan has a new resident. Roxy the Owl came from upper New York, legend goes, to experience the bright lights and see the big tree that another owl told her about.
You see, in 2020, while the annual Christmas tree went up in the square, a worker discovered a baby owl in the branches of the huge blue spruce. He hitched a ride all the way from Oneonta, New York. The owl was dehydrated and hungry, but okay physically. And after a few weeks at an owl resort (better known as a wildlife center) she was re-adapted to life in the wild. Which is when, supposedly, she went back home and bragged to Roxy about her Manhattan life. Roxy decided to discover the excitement for herself, and the rest of the story is here.
Moral of the story: You can make big bucks by manipulating a miniscule fact.
This one’s a hoot…
What do you call an owl that can do magic tricks?
Hoodini.

Tweenagers and up:
Hoot
by Carl Hiaasen
This book has all the modern pain points: bullying, endangered owls, big construction. A well-written, interesting story. I haven’t read it all but it seems it would be a good read-aloud book.
Amazon says:
This Newbery Honor winner and #1 New York Times bestseller is a beloved modern classic. Hoot features a new kid and his new bully, alligators, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes.
Everybody loves Mother Paula’s pancakes. Everybody, that is, except the colony of cute but endangered owls that live on the building site of the new restaurant. Can the awkward new kid and his feral friend prank the pancake people out of town? Or is the owls’ fate cemented in pancake batter?
Children’s picture books:
Little Hoot
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Cartoon style images along with a good story. This is like two stories in one. I won’t give it away, but it’s a fun twist, just like Amazon says.
Amazon description:
It’s not fair! All Little Owl wants is to go to bed at a reasonable hour, like his friends do. But Mama and Papa say little owls have to stay up late and play. So Little Owl spends all night jumping on his bed, playing on the jungle gym, and doing tricks on his skateboard—but he’s hooting mad about it! Children who have a hard time going to bed will love this fun twist on the universal dilemma.
