Inspiring Inklings of Real Life
The Broken Hamburger
This story caught my eye because it’s about a 7 year old girl with autism.
She was managing fairly well, her sister said, quietly eating her fries and drinking her chocolate milk.
But she didn’t touch her cheeseburger, which she ordinarily loves.
“It’s broken,” she said. She couldn’t eat a broken hamburger. The server, no doubt trying to help, had cut the burger in half.
When the sister ordered another burger, the watchful waiter noted the uneaten sandwich, and raised questioning brows. The sister explained about the 7 year old’s autism and, not wanting to upset the staff, asked that a new one be added to their bill.
But that’s not what happened, and a small town restaurant in Utah made national news by their little act of kindness to a family who faces daily challenges. They fixed the hamburger and even the manager came over to apologize for giving her a broken one. She was so happy she said, “I missed you!” to the hamburger, and kissed it over and over.
Meltdown averted, life continued happily for all.
