about adventures on a 1919 homestead, Lucy the friendly hen.
and a driver with attitude.
This was the week we looked forward to… TRAVEL!
We boarded a jet plane and ended up at the Little Farm by the River. Where our son and his wife and two boy g’littles live. And did I tell you, a Number 3 g’little is coming to live with them in February? We’re so excited. They waited 5 years for this event. The boys are 8 and 6, and they wanted at least one more in the family. Besides all the animals and pets, which they dearly love, but are just not the same, you know.
So much happened in our 4 short days on the farm!! I can’t begin to tell you how tired this grandma is. I need a vacation to recover from our vacation trip!
Our little bus trip from the airport to our car was too stressful for so late at night. (We got home at midnight.) Our young driver had more attitude than we could stomach after a long day, scolding a passenger for letting her dog go too far from her seat, calling her a “girl” and wishing her a good weekend. ??? We don’t know. But we tiptoed carefully around her muttering, praising her memory for knowing where we should get off because that’s where we got on last Monday. And trying to see the fox she saw roaming the parking lot. She said we probably wouldn’t see it!!!! Lol, lot’s of types. Maybe on the spectrum? Sure seemed familiar.
Yay for travel! We actually did it!
‘Ink Re-Cap 153: Our Week on the Blog
We had a short week on the blog, because of our little trip north. We were too busy connecting with our grandchildren to have time to connect with the whole world. Not that we didn’t think of you… I wished more than once that I could write a post about building an electric circuit with boy g’littles or cleaning out our DIL’s garden for the fall or sewing 4 maternity dresses or any one of the many things we did. Our 4 days with them were jam-packed.
Since we left Monday evening, we were able write two posts before we left.
Our Monday Bride post is a true story about When Happy-Ever-After Means “Whatever After” and the vow “in sickness or health” gets tested.
Our Baby post was a continuation of Kim’s Story, Chapter 8: Our Autism Journey.
Then during the week, hearing stories of friends struggling with covid and other prayer requests, the post Our Spiritual First Responders: Whom To Call In A Crisis was born. It was on my heart, so it didn’t take very long to write. I hope the thought brings you comfort like it did to me.
The World Out Our Window
This week, the world out our windows was golden.
Golden-leaved trees along the river and on the farm.
Bright prairie sunsets tinging the landscape with golden rays of purest beauty.
One evening we drove to their town to eat out. And on a hill, we saw windows of gold. A cabin situated just right to catch the last rays of the setting sun.
Cranes flying south, silhouetted against a gold and red sky. Nebraska has the largest sandhill crane landing place in the country for cranes flying south to stop, drink, rest and regroup.
Best of all were the golden moments of time spent with family, making memories to hold close till the next time. Which we hope is Christmas.

Inspiring Inklings of Real Life
When things go so wrong on a 1919 farmhouse yard.
We went to the little farm by the river thinking we would help with some projects they want/need to do before BABY.
Which includes a bathroom and bedroom in the basement. But you can’t just start finishing a basement when it’s that old, and no records of pipes and electric lines have been kept. You don’t know, so you just start in and hope for the best. This time, unlike many things on that well built old house, things went terribly wrong.
They removed an old shower someone installed in the basement as the first step in creating a nice modern bathroom. Immediately it became obvious that the shower had been hiding a dark secret. No sooner had they uncovered the floor drain when the water from showers, dishwasher, toilet and clothes washer began to back up and flood the basement.
So before any steps to a new bathroom could be taken, they had to find the sewer problem. Starting from a place of complete frustration because of the lack of known history. They found the place where the septic ended up, but what was between there and the house? A blocked line? A full tank? Where was the tank, if there was one?
This isn’t our usual topic on this website, but this was our life this week. And then, after 2 days of trying this and doing that, dozens of phone calls and researching, and even water-witching for the lines, our son got in touch with the perfect man. The perfect man had us fixed up and going in just a few hours, and our 2+ days of frustration and helplessness turned into courage again. Next time we go, we can surely get something done!
Book of the week: “The Last Flight”*
by
How bad does life have to be before you take the desperate measure of disappearing from your world?
The author follows two characters, fictional but based on research into unhappy marriages, who plan to vanish and begin new lives somewhere completely new. The story takes a twist when the two women, at the last minute, decide to exchange their escape plans and adopt each other’s identity.
These women aren’t portrayed as Christians, But as Christians, perhaps we’d never have to literally disappear from a difficult life, as we have God’s family to help us navigate to safety. But we first would have to open up and ask for help. It’s hard to imagine this story happening in a Christian marriage, but unfortunately, we probably have all heard of a few instances where it has.
What would make a woman give up on her God, her fellowman, and depend completely on herself?
A children’s book:
“Tell Me The Stories of Jesus“ by Caleb Crider.
When we asked the boy g’littles if we should read a story, this is the book they brought us. The stories are super short, yet interesting. The artwork is the best. It portrays Jesus as someone you might see in a group or at church today. It makes Him seem approachable, like a Friend you already know.

GPBookstore’s description:
This Bible story book has 70 short stories about Jesus. The stories are written in simple, clear language that children can understand. Smirk:
Parallel lines have so much in common.
It’s sad to think they’ll never meet.
Random Factoid:
A chef’s hat has 100 pleats. Meant to signify the 100 ways to cook an egg.
Very important information. For someone who plans to make chef’s hats.
