Random Sketches and Scribbles
about 10th birthdays, travel prices
and pumpkin bread.
As Southwest Airlines says it so well, I “just wanna get away.”
We talk about taking a trip, going to see our little-farm-by-the-river family, or even just a quick in-state trek.
Somehow it doesn’t happen. The flight to Grand Island isn’t bad, very good in fact. But then they want us to pay half again to take a suitcase along? Ridiculous.
We call Hampton Inn for prices, and they’ve almost doubled from pre-pandemic.
How is this allowed? How can I catch up in my brain, when covid, which does affect the brain, didn’t affect it in that direction?
So we stay home and miss our children and the crisp, fall prairie air,
and we stay home and miss the high desert with its gold-mine specked mountains and pine trees.
Yay for travel! May someone enjoy it…

It’s addictive. Like Dutch Bros coffee or Cap’n Crunch cereal. Don’t judge me.
I made some moist, spicy, orange loaves to share with a family who has a baby in the hospital,
and before Kim and I put the knife down – and the man of the house, it’s his fault, too – the butter dish was empty.
(Because you can’t eat warm bread without a cold slab of butter melting on each slice.)
And I had to hurry to wrap the last loaf before we devoured it.
What’s your favorite fall temptation?

Inspiring Inklings of Real Life
10th Birthday for our oldest g’little!!!
I simply can’t believe how big and smart and grown up our oldest g’little is becoming. She’s thrilled, of course.
But, 10 years old? How is that even possible? We’re so proud of the young lady she’s becoming. (You’ll probably be hearing this every year from now until…)
Her sister’s birthday is this month, also, on pumpkin day. So tomorrow we plan a little excursion to Box Canyon to rough it and celebrate. It couldn’t be better weather for it. And was I saying I needed a trip? This is about an hour’s drive from us, just north of Wickenburg, and it’s like crossing the border to another country. The only thing about going on Saturday, we probably won’t get our usual spot, and we’ll be shouting over the roar of ATVs driven with abandon by hoards of people enjoying the canyon right along with us. But we’ll find a little nook to light a fire and relax in our camp chairs while the hamburgers cook.
If you come visit us, we’ll likely take you to Box Canyon. It’s a favorite. (What we call “Box Canyon” is one of many in Arizona. This one is just northwest of Wickenburg on the Hassayampa River.)
Book of the week: “Band of Brothers”*
by
If you listened to the lecture by Jeff Giesel this month, about coping with the pandemic as a Church, you will have heard him talk about this book.
It’s the story about an elite band of WW2 soldiers who created chaos from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, in a good way. A way that promoted victory for the Allies. The band was created in 1942 and disbanded in 1945. However, these soldiers had a strong bond for the rest of their lives.
Jeff Giesel says if the Church sticks together like a “Band of Brothers” we can weather any storm.
A children’s book promoting cooperation and working together, with the bonus of colorful fall scenery:
“Pumpkin Soup“* by Helen Cooper. 2005
Cat, Squirrel and Duck make pumpkin soup the same way every fall. But one day Duck wants to change things up, and a fight ensues. Duck flaps out in a huff, and he stays away so long his friends begin to worry. They go out looking for him, and when they are reunited, they make up and work together again.
Miscellaneous
Smirk:
“What’s the best thing about Switzerland?”
“I don’t know, but their flag is a big plus.”
Random Factoid:
There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were.
Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he liked 57.
Hint: Hit the glass bottle on the “57,” not the bottom, to get the ketchup to flow. (heinz.com)
