‘Ink Re-Cap 139: Sketches, Scribbles and Inklings
‘Ink Re-Cap 139.
Sketches, scribbles and inklings about life.
Long awaited products arrive,
the search for a new PC continues,
and lunch out with my birthday people.
There is one thing to celebrate this week
besides July 4th at the beginning.
It’s the 10th this Saturday, and that means July is almost half over.
That means it’s only 45 or so days till September.
And we can think about breathing outside again.
The monsoons are here, with humidity, heat and exhausting sunshine.
This summer it honestly feels as if I’ll need prayers to make it through,
and I hardly ever go outside!

Lunch with my birthday people
Do you ever hum along,
looking forward to meeting your friends
and you’re especially happy
because you haven’t been together for ages
and you have so so much to catch up on.
You’re having a good hair day
and you didn’t leave any half finished work on the table.
So you swoosh into the restaurant and ask if your people are there.
They ask for names and say, “Sorry, no, they’re not here. No one by those names.”
You sit on the bench to wait and chat with the hostess who says she remembers the last time you were there and you can’t figure out why because you never saw her before.
Then you look at your phone. You listen to the last message saying where you’ll meet and when. You finally relax enough to let your brain kick in.
And it hits you like a water balloon to the face.
You walk outside and look for the sign on the building.
And you realize you told the hostess, “Well, they said Red Lobster. I’m pretty sure… let me check…”
and you’re in Olive Garden
and because you have gray hair and you’re wearing a pretty dress and a cute purse
the hostess didn’t want to embarrass you and tell you where you actually are.
Yes. That happened.
But I’m okay with it.
I am.
We had a great time at Red Lobster.
I’m pretty sure that’s where we were.

Inspiring Inklings of Real Life
“Fun” Flutter Fly Butterflies:
Remember when you were a gullible kid and someone would hand you a tin that said, “Rattlesnake Eggs?”
Of course you knew no one had rattlesnake eggs in a can,
but you had to know what they thought they could pass off as snake eggs.
So you pried the lid off the tin,
and just as you got one side up,
the whole thing exploded in your hands,
and a long fabric covered spring slammed you in the stomach.
Or whatever body part you happened to be aiming toward with the top of the tin.
If you like that kind of adrenaline,

you might even burn a few extra calories just by watching these crazy things.
Inspiring Book: “Sold on a Monday” by Kristina McMorris
This is a historical novel set in the depression era, but reads like “The Worst Hard Time.”
If the heat is getting to you, and you want a lazy, fall-asleep book on the beach,
this book is not the one.
I can almost guarantee some squinting at the sun while the… not tears… but, your eyes water.
This is a real read.
Do you want your children to learn about the depression?
Try “Children of the Dust Bowl” by Jerry Stanley. About children of migrant farm workers in Oklahoma, and the man who made a school in a field.
Yes, it’s still summer vacation for most, but they’ll need a break from the heat and fun.
Hand them something to make them think.

Our totally useless factoid for the week.
Whaaat? I know you’re not going to believe this Ripley-esque story!
Inspiring Quote

Mary Oliver’s writings celebrated the natural world. She could meditate on a bird’s plumage and come up with wisdom. Her contemplation of nature’s small wonders reminds us that simple things have the power to change us in profound ways. By paying attention we can let joy in and avoid spiraling negativity. She reminds us that we have the choice to let the world delight us rather than beat us down.
