Here’s how to Block Paint
a Vintage looking Apple Book-Page Garland
for a fall baby shower. To match
our Vintage Apple Baby Shower Stationery.
In this post we shared Autumn Apples Vintage Baby Shower ideas.
There are fun ideas for the menu, décor and a cute vintage-style Baby Shower Invitation.
Today we want to show you an easy Book Page Garland to use for your vintage apple theme.
And yes, it has apples painted on book page pennants, but you’ll never guess what you use for painting!
How to Block Paint Book-Page Pennants With an Apple
Supplies:
- an apple
- knife, cutting board, Exacto knife, Tacky glue, cardstock for pattern, scissors, pencil, ruler
- Green and red Block Painting paint*, or an acrylic craft paint will work, too
- paper plates for paint palette, 2 paint rollers*
- old book that measures at least 9″ x 6″
- jute twine* or red rayon ribbon* or another hanging string
Directions:
- Make your pennant pattern:
On cardstock, draw an isosceles triangle measuring 6″ across, and 8″ down from the center of that 6″. Place a dot at the center mark, then draw straight lines from each end of the 6 in line to the dot. Cut this out for your pattern. - Cut the pennants:
Use the pattern to trace triangles onto book pages. Cut out triangles. - Make your “paint block:”
Slice an apple in half from stem, through the core, to the bottom “belly button.” Use a large knife and cutting board, so you can place the apple on a stable surface to slice the apple exactly in half. - Paint the pennants:
Squeeze a puddle of paint of each color onto a paper plate or plastic lid. Run a paint roller through one color and cover the sliced surface of one half of the apple with paint. Place the apple paint side down onto a pennant. Paint half the pennants. Allow it to dry. Repeat with the other color of paint, with a different roller, or wash the first one clean and dry with a paper towel. Roll in the second color, then block paint the rest of the pennants. - Make the garland:
Fold each pennant down 1/2″ from the top. Cut your length of string and mark at evenly spaced intervals where you want the center of each pennant to be glued. Place a pennant at a mark, turn the flap over the string, and glue. Do this with each pennant. Let some glue attach the string to the pennant, so they stay evenly spaced.
I love the way the paint misses here and there with block painting, adding to the vintage look.
Hang your vintage apple book-page garland and enjoy.
I have to confess, I am using mine for fall décor, not for a baby shower.
But I wouldn’t mind if someone was putting on a baby shower and I could contribute to it!
I would find some tree-ish looking branches and stand them up with blocks, then tie the garland between them to use as part of the back drop. For added detail, hang fall leaves and cut out apples to the branches. Make another garland with the words “Welcome Baby” to hang as a double garland. Or triple hang with a fall leaf garland.
