I’ll never forget the day our oldest son, around 8 years old at the time, burst into the house from our garage workshop. Eyes bright with excitement, he showed me his latest creation. He’d been busy in there for hours: sawing, hammering, and problem-solving. In his hands was a wooden canteen holder he made entirely on his own, complete with a twine loop to attach to his belt. Watching him work with his hands taught me something profound about the Hands-On Explorer learning style—how some children learn and engage with their world.
Since his dreams centered around camping and hunting then, a canteen holder was essential gear. I bit back my smile at the unlikely value of this invention. However, inspired by his ingenuity, I got my sewing machine humming and created canteen holders out of camouflage material. Those canteen holders hung from our two sons’ big-boy belts on countless “hunting expeditions.” Most of which took place in the tree house in our backyard they kept safe with a sign declaring “No girls allowd” (spelling preserved). Painstakingly black marker-ed on blue plywood they snitched from one of my own projects. (I still have the sign. Go figure.)
