Fun Back to School Project: Altered Composition Books
Today we have a fun back to school project for children:
dressed up composition books.
This is a great way to use up scrapbook papers
and your odds and ends stash.
You all know by now that Kim and I have a thing about composition books.
We don’t actually use them that much (at least not since our GED classes 5 years ago.)
But we just like to dress them up.
Desk candy.
So when we had Saturday sleepover with the girl g’littles last weekend,
we thought altered comp books would be a fun project.
We asked if they wanted them for themselves,
or as a gift to their teacher.
They chose to make personalized books for their own use.

What you need for dressed up composition books:
- Composition book
- Scrapbook paper stash
- Ribbon and accessory stash
- Stamps and ink pads
- Sticker stash
- Mod Podge
- Tacky glue and/or hot glue, ruler or tape measure, cutting board, scissors, pencil
Dress Up Time:
We made an Altered Composition Book Pinterest board for the girls to pick their style of book so we’d know which papers to look for from the scrapbook paper stash.
And it was so much fun to see the styles each chose.
One girl chose simple, minimalist designs,
while the other girl picked more vintage, frou-frou designs. (A girl after my own heart. If time allowed, I could spend a whole day decorating one cover. Handpicking and designing the exact right ephemera for my theme.)
And if I would have spent time thinking about what they would pick that’s exactly what I would have expected from these sisters-who-are-best-friends. So close in heart yet each an individual.
When they chose their styles we started pulling samples from our stashes for them. They picked their papers and we cut them to size.
There are detailed directions in this post about cutting papers and gluing them to the books.
Of course, every book we make is different and fun, and these turned out beautifully.
