Friends Give: A Bible Lesson About Abraham and Lot
Friends Give: A Bible Lesson About Abraham and Lot
Abraham kindly takes his orphan nephew along
on the big move to a new country.
Then Lot, the nephew,
selfishly chooses the best land for himself.
Friends Give: What the Bible Says About Selfishness
The Bible has many stories about giving and the opposite, being selfish.
When people are selfish, they suffer consequences.
What happens if you have a fight with a friend?
Maybe you and your friend both want to play with the same toy.
Or maybe you can’t decide which game to play.
How do you settle your differences?
Do you argue, raise your voices, maybe say, “I’m not going to be your friend anymore?”
Then you stomp off and stay away from your friend.
After awhile, you think about it.
You think, “I’m bored. I miss my friend. I wish I hadn’t argued with her.”
But what are you going to do?
You hurt her feelings, and she’s ignoring you. She’s playing with other friends.
And you feel lonely.
What could you have done to prevent this?
Does it help to blame her? Does that change what’s happening?
Who needs to give in? Who needs to say sorry?
What if your friend doesn’t say sorry first?
Abraham and Lot
In this Bible Lesson Abraham was kind to his nephew, Lot. He took him along to a new country to get a fresh start.
Both uncle and nephew had many animals. When they got to the new country, there was not room on the good land for both the herds of animals.
So Abraham let his nephew choose the land he wanted for his animals.
Then Abraham took the land his nephew didn’t want.
Unfortunately, Lot took the best land, and his animals got fat and he got richer.
But something happened. Having the best didn’t make Lot happier.
Abraham didn’t get angry with his nephew for choosing the best.
In the end, Abraham was happier than Lot, and God was happy with Abraham for being a kind friend.
