Forever Friends Bible Lesson, David and Jonathan
A Children’s Lesson from our Forever Friends Bible study book. David and the king’s son, Jonathan, form a friendship that goes deeper than life itself.
David gently picked the strings of his harp. King Saul leaned his head back on his throne and listened. The music calmed him. King Saul admired this brave boy who killed a giant. When the king first heard David play the harp, he invited him to live in the palace. The king’s son, Jonathan, and David became best friends.
David became a good soldier, and the king put him in charge of his men of war. They won many battles. When the army marched home, women came out in the streets singing, “Saul slayed his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
King Saul became jealous of David.
How dare the women call David greater? He summoned David to play the harp but the music only disturbed him more. The king picked up his javelin and aimed it at David. It pierced the wall beside the harp. Shocked, David jumped up and then ran for his life.
The king sent soldiers to kidnap David. But David quickly climbed through a window, and his wife, Michal, hid the rope. She heaped blankets on the bed to look as if he was sleeping. This fooled the soldiers for awhile and David got away.
David went to Jonathan. “What have I done? Why does your father hate me?”
Jonathan said, “I don’t think he hates you.”
But the story gets sad, because the King does indeed hate David.
Forever Friends are parted.
The king got angry even with his son Jonathan, and David had to run away.
They hugged each other and cried.
Then they made a covenant: “God will keep us friends forever.”
Would they ever see each other again?
