My Mother-in-Law lost her father many years ago.
When the family divided and chose the treasures from their parent’s estate,
my mother-in-law chose a wrench her father used to crank his ol’ Model A.
This seemed like a real prize, but, honestly, what would she do with it?
Stash it away in a drawer and view it every few years when deep-cleaning?
Nope. She had a plan. She asked me to paint a scene of her old home place on a wooden plaque.
Then we attached a couple of hooks to display the old wrench, which she then hung in her family room with other family treasures. Such as a set of clear glass kerosene lamps, a long hand-saw, and more. It became a mini-museum wall, holding many precious memories.
So, thinking about Father’s Day coming up, and the value that Model A wrench held in Mom’s heart, I wondered about creating memory gifts for fathers.
One year while vacationing on my parents’ farm I wandered to the back forty and pulled a cedar shake off one of the old buildings back there. I wire brushed the years of weather and dust off, then painted a scene of a wheat field on one side. I attached a poem I wrote for him, and printed using a vintage paper technique. Then over a corner of the paper, I attached a few stalks of wheat. It hung on a wall in every home they lived in after that. Ending with a room in a retirement care home.
Summer time means family reunions!
For a family reunion many years ago I bought 11 shadow box frames, and created a memory collage inside each one. I attached a Bible Verse that began with a letter of our last name. The theme was time, with a torn paper background with clocks and sayings about the value of family time. Yes, you read that right. Eleven. One for Mom and Dad, and one for each of us 10 children!
Father’s Day Memory Gift personalized ideas:
If you were to create a memory gift for your Father, what would you pick as the item that defines him in your mind? My father was a wheat farmer, so I chose wheat. He was also a reciter of Bible verses, so that inspired the Name and Time collage.
Is your dad a carpenter or DIY guy?
Buy or create a memory gift using a hammer. To DIY, cut words with black vinyl on your Cricut or using this amazing wood burning kit.
For your Accountant Father
Not to slam your Dad or anything, but sometimes guys who love science and experiments and formulas tend to be a little absentminded. That might make them a tad clumsy. And their phones might need protecting.
This could be a DIY if you bought a plain cover and followed this tutorial using a descriptive phrase.
Do you happen to be engaged this Father’s Day?
I’m sure your wry Dad would get a kick out of this mug, if he’s paying for stuff right and left.
(And yes, we’d love to make your wedding invitations. What’s your Dad’s contact info??)
This can be a DIY, if you happen to have a speck of spare time. Use your Cricut or other cutting machine.
Try it with this tutorial.
