DIY Farmhouse Recipe Stand: Chic Card Display
DIY a Farmhouse style Recipe Stand
made with upcycled thrifted elements.
A tutorial to make a shabby chic holder
to display your cards while you cook.
Do you have a nifty recipe card collection?
I filled an old tin recipe box (from my normally-non-gift-giving dad)
packed to the bulging sides
with recipe cards, each with their own plastic protective sleeve,
while I was volunteering at Hogan Hozhoni, a stopping place for children when their parents or relatives were otherwise occupied. (Clears throat.)
Some weeks I was the Head Cook for up to 30 people at 3 meals a day!
Yes, that short paragraph brings up a truck load of memories from years ago.
Sweet and bittersweet memories.
Those recipes are seldom used these days, however, with all the new cookbooks, my binder recipe keeper, and Pinterest saves keeping me more than busy in the kitchen.
So I might use my recipe card holder to display printables or quotes of the day.
Because a pretty thing can’t be stuck away out of sight.
DIY Farmhouse Recipe Stand
What I used:
- thrifted candlestick
- block of 1″ x 4″ x 5″ wood from my husband’s stash
- metal clip from my stash
- paint, sandpaper
How I did it:
- Cleaned and sanded everything well before assembly. Thrift store finds I usually wash with a) Dawn dish soap and water, or b) vinegar and water. Then I sand to get it smooth, and also give it tack for the paint. Dusted it well after sanding.
- Glued the board to the candlestick. (Nope, see below.)
- Painted the stand with thin white paint. Let the wood show through, and sanded some paint off later. Used antiquing wax to give it a shabby look.
- My metal paper clip just happened to have bakers twine attached to it, so I hung the clip from the top of the wood chunk to hold the recipe card!
(The links for the products I used are Affiliate Links. This means if you purchase the item, I get a few pennies. The price doesn’t change for you, though.)
Something good happened on the way to San Jose
You see, a candlestick has a candle nail on the top, to keep the candle situated.
Well, this handy dandy candle nail works to keep my chunky block of wood-that’s-now-a-recipe-card-holder in place, too.
You just press the block onto the nail, and it stays in place quite firmly. (Or if it happens to have a knot right at that place where it needs to grab the nail, you grab your meat pounder and use it for a hammer to pound it firmly onto the nail.)
And, now, wait for it,
the voila! moment…
I can change the recipe card block out for a shelf sitter any time I want!!
Win!
