“
Whither thou goest, I will go,
where thou lodgest, I will lodge.
Thy people shall be my people,
thy God, my God.
“
Ruth 1:16
These words have long been used as solemn promises between bridal couples.
It’s so fascinating to me how the words were spoken by a daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law.
Naomi lived far away from her own people, and both her daughters-in-law were foreigners.
When all their men died, Naomi, according to the times, needed to travel to her own country where a male relative could care for her. She thought her DILs would stay with their own people, but Ruth remembered the things her MIL told her about her people. She knew she’d be happier with Naomi than with her own people.
So at the crossroads, Orpah turned back to her people, and Ruth journeyed on with Naomi.
And we all know the end result of that famous decision. Marriage to the love of her life, and her descendants included the Son of God, Jesus.
Whither thou goest, I will go.
The words fit so well with our travel theme bridal shower (as they would at a wedding).
So our post today is how to use a map to make a poster with this verse.
What you’ll need:
- map of your choice
- printable of the verse (get onto our GIFTee list and download our verse)
- graphite transfer paper, pencil, permanent black marker
- poster hanger or this DIY, made 36″ wide
- macramé cord for hanging
Letter the Map:
- Find a large clear table space for the map and use pattern weights to hold it in place.
- Place the transfer paper on top of the map, with the graphite side down. (This post shows how.)
- Situate the verse on the map where you want it. Use more weights to keep your paper in place. If you’re worried about slippage, cut long strips of paper and tape it to the verse. Tape the strips to the table beyond the edge of the map and the transfer paper. This will also keep the map in place without using weights.
- Trace the letters onto the map with a dull pencil. (A sharp pencil might tear the papers.)
- Remove the pattern and transfer paper.
- Letter the verse to the map with permanent markers. We use fine point first, then fill in empty areas with a larger point marker.
- Personalize the map if you wish, with the couples’ names and wedding date. Create the pattern on your word program, then transfer as you did the verse. Ours is for a bridal shower so we won’t personalize it.
Hang the Lettered Map:
If you buy a hanger follow the package’s directions for hanging.
We’re making our own hanger like the one in this DIY, except 36″ wide. The slats will be 1″ wide.
We plan to stain the wood dark walnut, instead of painting it white.
Instead of making a bead hanger we’ll use macramé cord. Place a knot about 6″ from each end of the hanger cord and ravel it to look like a tassel.
