The Doctor’s House
The Village Doctor used to see patients in one of the front rooms, but finally he was able to open a little clinic on Main Street. Complete with a stern-looking nurse in a white cap. Now his wife doesn’t have to interrupt her day to drive out in the country with him to deliver babies or mix tinctures in her kitchen for little Billy’s whooping cough. And she sent away for parlor furniture with plum-colored upholstery. It should arrive in time for Christmas!
Courthouse
Important things happen at this big, stately-looking building. But at Christmas! At Christmas the big porch’s columns are strung with pine garlands, and between each column big flower pots hold perfect cone-shaped trees. The school children made strings and strings of popcorn to wrap them, so the village birds have something to eat on these freezing cold winter days.
Church
The Village people are walking to Church for the Christmas service. Snow drifts gently from the sky, but the sun looks like it could pop through the clouds soon. The snow beside the sidewalks sparkles like the diamonds on Grandma Murphy’s Sunday brooch clasped on her soft merino scarf. Parson Edward’s tall hat scrapes a low branch, and snow swooshes down on his family. Little Merry squeals, “Ooh! Papa! That’s cold!” while her big brother tries to grab a handful in his wool mittens. Parson’s wife laughs as she blinks the snow off her eyelashes. All the families call out “Merry Christmas!” to each other as they stamp snow off their boots on the front porch. Then they sweep through the double doors into the Church as the bell in the tower rings out merrily.
