War in My Ancestors’ Homeland

Reading the news this week is a scary thing.

There’s no way we can know the outcome of Russia’s attacks on the Ukraine. The outcome hardly matters in the face of the suffering this will have on so many people.

People that may be related to me, through great-grandparents who used to live on the very land that saw some of the first hits of Russian bombs this week. That makes it very, very real.

Some of our Church family, missionaries in the Ukraine, have waited over 40 hours in the line crawling to the Polish border. Did they get across? Will the bombs get close to the Polish border? What will happen to the friends who huddle in their cars with them, hoping they will be able to escape with the people who brought the love of God to them. Will they ever go home again? Will the missionaries ever see their new friends again?

However, God is in their midst. He will not leave them comfortless.

If we don’t believe that, we have nothing…

Inspiring Inklings of Real Life

The World Outside Our Work Window

This was a hard, hard week. I would like to tell you the whole story and the magnitude of our feelings of despair for a few moments one evening.

But it wouldn’t be fair. I can’t do that to Kim. She has a part of her life (Autism with its co-morbids) that causes ups and downs that she, much less we, cannot make sense of.

She had a cold this week. Is that what triggered the anxiety? The extreme moments of utter confusion that caused her to max out on her emotions? Did the cold medicine clash with her other meds to create a fire in her brain that she didn’t know how to extinguish? It’s slowly going down, and we hope she’ll be back to her normal next week.

But we don’t know.

Just like we don’t know where the world will be next week.

We only need to trust, pray, and know in our hearts that God is. always. in control.

Is there any humor worth repeating this week?

Even while laughter is the best medicine, and I believe God has a sense of humor, I don’t think that’s what He wants us to spread this week.

Let’s spread praying hands around the globe.

 

Books of the week:

“Returning Home*

by Lorreen Plett, 

The news this week made me think of this book. It’s not a light read. Lorreen dug deep into her family history, and didn’t spare the details of their lives in the “old country.” It makes me so thankful that some of these great people saw the need to leave their homeland to come to America to follow the true God.

Though it is a true story of one man and his family, it also gives a lot of insight to the background of the Low German Mennonite people while living in Prussia and in Russia before they migrated to North America. (The second book “Crossing the Distance” has the story of the migration) This book clearly brings out the need for repentance and the forgiveness of sins only through the blood of Christ.”

Somewhere along the way, your children will start asking questions about their ancestry. This book explains how to dig into history to “map” their history. It could be more helpful to parents to help their children, as it’s geared to upper grades. But that would be the most fun, if the whole family got involved in the family charts.
