What you need:
- A square of 2″ x 6″ x 6″ scrap wood. If you don’t own any scrap wood, visit Lowe’s or Home Depot’s lumber department and look in their garbage cans. It might be a good idea to ask before you snitch their trash, though. Usually they’re happy to let you have scraps. Note: a 2″ x 6″ actually measures more like 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ so keep that in mind when you cut it square.)
- Mod Podge, brush, sanding block.
- Craft paint or stain to finish the shelf sitter where it won’t be covered with the print, if desired.
- Printable, cut to size.

How to Make it:
This is probably the easiest DIY you’ve ever made, here’s the rundown:
- Paint or stain the sides of the wood block that won’t be covered with the print.
- Cover the unpainted side with thin Mod Podge.
- Attach the print.
- Let it dry. Sand the edges smooth where the paper overlaps.
- Antique if you wish.
Beaded Shelf Sitter
What you need:
- One of your finished square shelf sitters.
- 3/4″ wooden beads
- jute twine
- Stapler, glue, scissors, or electric drill and bit the size of the twine.
How to do it:
- Cut about 12″ of twine.
- String 6 beads on the twine.
- Staple and glue one end to the top of a shelf sitter, with about 3″ of extra twine.
- Staple the other end, then pull the twine tight so the beads stand nicely.
- Glue the twine at the staple so it can’t loosen.
- Cut the twine and unwind the string to make tassels.
- Option: if you don’t want tassels, drill holes into wood where the bead string ends. Stick the twine ends into the holes and glue tightly.
Which shelf sitter will you make?
