The couple always welcomed the prophet when he came to town.
He came often, so they built a room just for him, on the roof of their house.
Elisha felt very thankful and promised them an amazing gift from God!
The Bible Story of Elisha’s Room on the Roof
“Look!” The woman tightened her scarf under her chin. She watched a traveler plod up her street. She knew this man.
“Come in, come in!” she said. “Come eat bread at our house and rest a bit.”
“Oh, no, I don’t want to bother you.”
“Bother me? You could never be a bother! Please come in.”
Elisha slapped dust from his robe and entered the door. The kind woman of Shunem showed Elisha where to sit, and bustled about, getting bread and pouring water. Elisha and the woman’s husband visited as he ate.
“Thank you, you are very kind.” Elisha picked up his walking stick. The woman watched him leave, and then turned to her husband. “My dear, this Elisha is surely a holy man of God. He passes by often as he goes about preaching and helping people. I wish we could make a room for him. We can build it on the roof.”
The couple built the room on the roof, and Elisha came often. The prophet loved staying with them, and was thankful for the special room.
So to thank them, he promised God would send them something special, too.
God would give them the son they had wished for a long, long time!
