Helpful Hints:
- Measure your waist, and multiply by 2.5. Then add 36 inches to that length for tying a knot to wear the belt. If your waist is 31″ go with 30″ since the knots don’t meet completely when you wear the belt. You can even leave 2 or 3 inches for the knot that secures the belt while wearing it. However, we’ll go with 30″ for our example. 30 x 2.5 + 36 = 106″ for one length of cord. Cut 4 of these lengths.
- If the type of cord you use frays quite a bit, tie knots at both ends of each cord.
- Measure 18″ from one end of all 4 cords. This is where your first knot begins.
Directions:
- Grab one end of all four cords and tie around a knob or stabilizing rod of some sort.
- Tie 4 square knots in a tight row. Check this post for directions on tying a square knot.
- Bring the outside cords to the center, and the middle cords to the outside. Use the middle cords, now on the outside, to tie the next set of 4 square knots. Leave 1″ to 1.25″ of space between each set of square knots.
- Alternate the cords after each set of 4 square knots.
- End with a set of 4 square knots close to your waist measurement. If it’s a little short, the knot you use to tie your belt for wearing will be a little further from the knots. If the square knots meet too closely to tie a proper knot for wearing the belt, undo a knot or two at each end. In other words, the belt will begin and end with a set of 2 or 3 square knots instead of 4. Another option is to undo one set of 4 square knots from one end only.
- If one or two cords are longer than the rest, trim them and tie a new knot. The ends don’t have to be even.
- Add beads to the ends of the belt if you wish. One bead gathering 4 cord ends, or a bead on each of the 8 cords. You decide on the look you want.
And that’s it! Really fun and fast.
Be sure to pin this project for later, because you’ll definitely want a belt in every color.
