Beach Art in a Re-Purposed Floating Frame Tutorial
Beach art print in a re-purposed floating frame. Our tutorial shows you a new twist: use twine in the frame instead of two pieces of glass.
Beach art is a necessary addition to summer decor.
When the days start heating up, you need something to remind you of cooler places. Of sand in your toes and waves softly licking the edges of beach as far as you can see.
Our picture frame trellised with twine is perfect to “float” a cool beach print.
Plus, it’s super easy to change up with new art when the mood strikes.
As we promised in the upcycled candle post, here is another beach themed project for you to DIY.
How to Re-Purpose an old Picture Frame into a Beach-Style Floating Frame:
Supplies:
- Old picture frame, at least 16″ x 20″ or bigger. The thrift store is a good place to find frames to up-cycle. This barnwood frame is perfect if you can’t find an old one.
- Jute twine.
- Tiny nails and hammer or staples and stapler.
- Printable. Download ours: fill in the form on this page and ask for “floating frame beach art print” or use any 8.5″ x 11″ print of your choice.
- White craft paint and paintbrush.
- Various grit Sandpaper, if you want a distressed finish. (Or use this technique for an easy beach effect.)
Step 1 Re-Purpose the Picture Frame
If you’re using a thrifted frame, you’ll need to clean it up. Remove the canvas if it has one. Wash it with soap and water, then wipe with vinegar water to get rid of any residual soap or oily dirt. Sand with fine grit sandpaper if it needs it.
Now it’s ready to paint. You will need at least two coats of white for good cover if your frame is dark. A light frame might only need one coat.
Distress the frame if you wish, with sandpaper. Or create a faux vintage look. Dry brush over the white with grey paint.
Step 2 String the Frame
Mark the back of your frame with pencil. First mark the center of each side of the frame. Then, going out on each side of the centers, pencil lines at 1″ to 1.5″ measures. The smaller the frame, the closer together you place the marks. But not closer than 1″ apart.
Place one end of the twine on the upper left mark and staple securely.
Pull the string straight down to the opposite side of the frame, and staple. Bring the twine sideways and staple.
Pull the jute straight up to the top of the frame and staple. Bring the string sideways to the next mark on the top and staple.
Go all across the top and bottom, then down the sides stapling twine across the frame from top to bottom.
Add Beach Art to the Floating Frame.
Slip your print between two front strands of twine.
It will look like it’s floating in the beach-style frame!
You can also use this as a bulletin board to hold greeting cards or photos, also. Just tuck them behind a strand of twine, or use tiny clothespins to hold them.
