Our winter grass is coming up a deep, luscious sea of green. Tiny blades of rye grass cover a yard that only a month ago was parched and mostly brown.
Another sign of fall in Arizona is the few trees and shrubs that change color. The cottonwoods are still green, but soon with be bright yellow before the leaves carpet the lawn. But the Heavenly Bamboo shrubs have a good cover of reddish brown leaves that are so lovely in fall bouquets. Other growers might call this bush nandina, and know how gorgeous the lacy leaves are even when green. Add the fall color and they are exquisite.
We finally have cool nights, and bearable days. One can step out the door in the middle of the day without feeling like you’re stepping into a kiln.
